An easy six-kilometre round trip that is open far longer than the alpine treks around it — roughly late April to October, busiest and warmest in July and August, quiet and clear-skied in September — with the Sonamarg road and the glacier area shut by heavy snow from November into March.

Safety & conditions
Permits
No permit or entry fee is required. Independent guides state the trek is open and free to all visitors, with no registration at the trailhead. Some operators list "forest permits and entrance fees" as included in their packages without naming an authority; there is no published fee schedule. The glacier lies inside the **Baltal–Thajwas Wildlife Sanctuary**, managed by the J&K Department of Wildlife Protection, so sanctuary rules on litter, fires and camping apply even though no permit is issued. Pony operators at Sonamarg are widely reported to overcharge and pressure visitors — agree the fare before you start (roughly Rs 700–1,500 in peak season, Rs 600–800 off-season).

About this trek
One of Kashmir's easiest and most popular glacier walks, the Thajwas trail climbs gently from Sonamarg through pine forest and open pasture to a broad snowfield that survives through summer at around 2,800 metres. The path is well trodden, pony rides are available for part of the route, and most visitors complete the round trip in half a day, making it a favourite for families and first-time trekkers.
