About Verinag
Verinag is a spring in Anantnag district at 1,851 m, about 78 km south-east of Srinagar. Its octagonal stone basin and surrounding arcade were built by the Mughal emperor Jahangir in 1620, and the adjacent garden was laid out by his son Shah Jahan.
The spring is the major source of the Jhelum river; historical accounts note water clear enough that a poppy seed stays visible on the bottom, and that it neither dries up nor overflows.
